HOW
SOUND TAUGHT ME
BEING LISA
GERRARDs GUEST
A few
years ago, Lisa Gerrard played a concert in Berlin.
I was lucky to have ticket and was loking forward to this, since I had loved
her music for a very long time but had never seen her live. When she sung
that night, I saw a great artist with a crystal clear voice that was
enchanting, breathtaking, pulsating and permanently emanating strong energy.
Her body language was outstanding: It looked as if Lisa had to remain in a
certain precise posture to allow these extraordinary sounds to leave her
body.
Lisa Gerrard sang her heart out and I felt as if somebody was singing a
direct path to gods heart trough the universe. More than ever I understood
that sound can be a mighty prayer.
THE OCEAN
WITHIN US
Ten years ago I had my own music project. I wrote lyrics from the bottom of
my heart, composed melodies at the piano and sang about love and the tragic
loss of it – human concerns that have been a major topic of art for the
longest time. I had the privilege to reach quite a few people with my music.
Sometimes I received letters from people who didn’t want anything more but
to thank me for the music that had helped them to explore inner worlds. One
of the most lovely lines I received was this: “Your music has accompanied me
in moments when I was searching for the ocean within me”.
The ocean within us – what is that? It was Freud criticizing religion, who
spoke about the “oceanic feeling” within us, the feeling of belonging to a
superior whole. If we ignore the intention that Freud had and merely look at
that oceanic feeling, what is left then? The ocean within us, that is in my
eyes, our home. The divine spirit living within us. It doesn’t matter
whether you call this ocean God, the divine, source energy or friendly
universe: this deep water is what I want to touch with my sound prayers. And
just like your finger tip on the waters'
surface leaves a circle that becomes
bigger and bigger, that is how the sound draws circles in your soul.
Allow this and see the wonders.
